Written by autopsy technician and co-host of “Morbid” – a popular true-crime podcost, Alaina Urquhart, “The Butcher and the Wren” is a classic, heart-throbbing cat-and-mouse thriller. Read on for The Butcher and The Wren Book Review.
Something dark is lurking in the Louisiana bayou: a methodical killer with a penchant for medical experimentation is hard at work completing his most harrowing crime yet, taunting the authorities who desperately try to catch up.
But forensic pathologist Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical crimes, and years of experience working in the Medical Examiner’s office, she’s never encountered a case she couldn’t solve. Until now. Case after case is piling up on Wren’s examination table, and soon she is sucked into an all-consuming cat-and-mouse chase with a brutal murderer getting more brazen by the day.
An addictive listen with straight-from-the-morgue details only an autopsy technician could provide, The Butcher and the Wren promises to ensnare all who enter.
Told through alternating perspectives, the story is about a Louisiana Serial Killer and a medical examiner who is piecing together his identity through his victims.
As a loyal fan to the Morbid Podcast, I could not WAIT to get my hands on this book. Although I am a religious fan of the true-crime podcast, I am not usually the first to pick up a thriller. With that said, The Butcher and the Wren is a MUST read. Without spoiling, we are left with many twists and turns, and heart-throbbing moments as we piece together the identity of the killer and just what he means to our medical examiner, Dr. Wren Muller.
Alaina Urquhart’s extensive research and experience has really helped the attention to detail in this twisty, turning plot.
After reading this quick read in less that two days, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the sequel, The Butcher Game that I ended up pre-ordering it. Although I have not yet read the sequel I am already anticipating another 5 star review!
