I usually make candles in larger batches, but I wanted to make some simple, cute candles to give as gifts. These DIY Lavender and Rosemary Candles not only are cute, but also cost effective and they smell delish too!
I used mason jars for these DIY Lavender & Rosemary candles, and then I decorated them with some burlap and flowers I found in the scrapbooking section. They really are super adorable!
This project would be a fun project to do with older kids or even with a group of friends!

Instructions for Lavender & Rosemary Candles
- You can use a double broiler, but I used a pot of water and then a glass bowl that i set in the water as it was boiling.
- Add soy flakes to glass bowl, and stir until they turn to liquid.
- Place the ends of the wicks (metal part) into the wax and then press to middle of bottom of jar. Let dry, this acts as an adhesive
- Once the wax has dried, take a closepin and pin it to the middle of the jar, letting the ends of the clothespin rest on each side.
- Pour the wax into the jar
- Pour 15 drops of each oil into the wax, (don’t add it in your wax on the stove, because it will burn)
- Gently stir the oils into the wax, as to not upset the wick itself
- Pour 1 TSP of dry lavender and rosemary into mixture, and stir gently
- Wrap the jars in a washcloth and let set for 24 hours. The washcloth protects it from cooling too fast, and prevents the glass from cracking. This is rare, but does happen.
Candle Tips:
- Allow the candle to “cure” or “harden” for 24 hours before burning.
- Trim the wick to 1″
- If you notice cracks or tunnelling in the wax, melt a bit more wax and fill in the cracks with the wax. They are still usable, its more of a cosmetic issue.
FAQ
Whats the best wax to use for candles?
Paraffin is the most popular, however its petroleum based so not the most natural product. Soy and Beeswax are the next most popular, and the most natural. Soy holds fragrance longer, however Beeswax has a natural honey smell that a lot of people find appealing. I typically use Soy.
Can I reuse old candle jars?
Absolutely! Its a great way to save money and re-use! Place the used candle jars in the freezer, after a couple days scrape out the excess wax and wick. I also have boiled the jars and then wiped the wax out as well.
